Getting Found On Google: SEO Basics Every Local Business Needs

When someone needs what you sell, they reach for their phone and search. If your business does not show up, they do not wait — they pick whoever does. That is the whole reason search engine optimisation, or SEO, matters. It is the work of making sure you appear when people search for what you offer.

The good news is that for a local business, you do not need to be an expert. You need to get the basics right, and the basics are more manageable than most people think.

Start with your Google Business Profile

This is the single most valuable thing a local business can do. Your Google Business Profile is what appears when someone searches your name or a service near them — the listing with your address, hours, phone number and reviews. If it is empty or missing, you are invisible in exactly the moment that matters most.

Fill it in completely. Add your real address and service area, correct opening hours, a phone number people can actually reach, photos of your work and premises, and a clear description of what you do. Then keep it updated. A profile that says you closed at 4pm when you are open until 6pm is a lost customer.

Get your reviews working for you

Reviews are how strangers decide to trust you. A steady flow of honest, recent reviews does more for a local business than almost anything else. Ask every happy customer, make it easy for them to leave one, and reply to the reviews you get — good and bad. Replying shows you are a real person who cares.

Make sure your website helps, not hurts

Google rewards sites that are easy for people to use. In practice that means your site should load quickly, work well on a phone, and say clearly what you do and where you do it. If a visitor cannot tell within a few seconds what you offer, a search engine will struggle too.

Use plain language that matches how your customers actually search. If you sell "emergency plumbing in Sandton," say that — do not bury it behind clever wording nobody types into Google.

Be consistent everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google profile, your social pages and any directory listings. When these details match, search engines trust your information more. Small inconsistencies add up, so pick one format and stick to it.

The honest truth about SEO

SEO is not a switch you flip. It is a set of good habits that compound over time. The businesses that win in local search are the ones that get the basics right and keep them right — not the ones chasing tricks.

Start with the Google Business Profile and reviews. Those two alone can change how easily new customers find you.
